Lt. Colonel Walter Escue Walter and Beth Escue upon his retirement from the United States Air Force in 1971. He moved his family to Houston, Texas and began working with Children's Press, a major publisher for K-8 library books.

Meanwhile, son Greg was serving in the United States Marine Corps as a helicopter pilot. Leaving the USMC in 1980, he partnered with his parents in the book business until 1983, when Walter and Beth retired.
